Looking for your next
wooden Boat proJect?
This kit is beautifully engineered
and results in a really pretty
boat. But the best part of all this
is that the Legend Model Boats
( legendmodelboats.com) Jersey
Skiff runs great, and even though
it’s truly fast, it isn’t hard to drive.
That being the case, I think it
would be a terrific first “fast boat.”
By the time it was finished, I had
spent about 85 hours on the
project over the course of about
eight weeks. The Speed Skiff is
a bit labor-intensive, but it isn’t a
hard project for anyone who has
built a few wooden boats.
This 1/6-scale Rich Koll design has a 32-inch-
long hull and a 12.3-inch-wide beam. The
model’s outline is true to scale, and it features
all-wood construction. The hull is built up from
balsa, ply and bass with mahogany veneer in all
the right places. It’s strong and light—the perfect
recipe for a great-running model!
I used a M.A.C.K. Products (mackproductsrc.
com) no. 7720 Marauder motor on 12 to 14 NiMH
cells. Guidance is 2-channel RC with throttle and
rudder control. I also used the M.A.C.K. Products
light kit to round out the very complete package.
Access to the drive system is through the scale
engine hatch cover, which opens to reveal the
